What is Secure Email Access by swissmail.org?

Secure Email Access enables you to encrypt all data that is exchanged between you and swissmail.org over the Internet. Anytime you access swissmail.org to change settings in Control Center or read messages in your mailbox, you communicate with swissmail.org via the Internet. Using Secure Email Access, the communication is completly encrypted inluding passwords, from and to headers.

How does Secure Email Access by swissmail.org work?

Secure Email Access establishes an encrypted communication link (SSL) between your browser or your email client program and swissmail.org. This is done automatically, i.e. you don't have to do anything, the procedure to establish a connection to swissmail.org is the same as usual.

Do I have to change any settings?

If you go to the swissmail.org homepage (http://www.swissmail.org), you will find an option box labeled "Secure Email Access". If this option box is selected, the connection to swissmail.org will automatically be encrypted. You do not have to change any other settings. Naturally, you may also de-select this option and use an unencrypted link to swissmail.org, as before. There are a few settings to be changed to use encryption in your email client program. Please note that your email client needs to be SSL enabled for Secure Email Access to work. Your supplier will be able to tell you whether your particular email client supports this feature or not.

What are the advantages of Secure Email Access?

Secure Email Access from swissmail.org provides two major advantages.
First, it enables you to connect securely with swissmail.org over the Internet, whenever you change settings in your control center as well as when you read emails from your mailbox.
Your password is protected as well and no information to whom and from whom you sent/received messages will be visible.

Second, swissmail.org-Customers exchange secured email among each other. The email traffic is completely encoded on the insecured Internet.

What are the drawbacks of Secure Email Access?

When the connection between your computer and swissmail.org is established, the encryption has to be initialized. This means a performance loss at the beginning of each swissmail.org session.
